Glaucoma Assessment

Glaucoma is known as silent thief of the vision. A normal person has a wider field of vision in both eyes. But the field of vision gradually reduces, starting from peripheral area to the center with increasing the level of Glaucoma. The nerve fiber layer damages are the main cause for this and eye pressure is one risk factor.

As it label as “Silent Thief”, there are no early signs which can detected by you. But if you get a “Glaucoma Assessment”, then your early signs of Glaucoma changers can be detected. At the same time it is necessary to do the assessment regularly to know the progress of the condition against medication.

There are few series of test included in the “Glaucoma Assessment” which will take around three to four times of primary eye examination time. The content of the Glaucoma Assessment is describing below.

  • Refraction
    • It is the primary procedure for vision assessment and finds the spectacle lenses power on vision problem. It takes around 15 minutes and it is recommended to bring the present glass prescription and past medical records.
  • Eye pressure
  • Due to various reasons eye pressure can be abnormal. Since eye pressure is a risk factor for glaucoma, it is necessary to know the values. The Pascal Tonometer is an instrument which used to measure the pressure of the eyeball.

  • GDx
  • The GDx –VCC (Scanning Laser Polarimeter) is used to find the thickness of nerve fibers layer.

  • Fundus photography
  • It is a special camera which used to get photos of the patients’ inside part of the eye. This will be helpful to see the progression over the period and can utilize as a medical records.

  • Central Corneal Thickness
  • The ultrasound pachymeter use to find the central corneal thickness.

  • OCT – Glaucoma
  • The Cirrus 5000 Optical coherent Tomography machine use to find the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and ganglion cell thickness.

  • Visual field test
  • The machine name is Humpry Visual Field analyzer. This test is used to measure the field of vision of the patient and one eye at a time can check. This is done by the patient and it takes double time of the primary eye examination.

    Based on the test results your eye doctor will be conclude whether you have any risk of glaucoma or better prognosis with the glaucoma medication.
